April beamed at me and Kate across a white-clothed table with fresh flowers spilling over a crystal vase in the middle. “Can we please note the day and time?”

Kate checked her watch. “Uh, Saturday at eleven a.m.”

April nodded. “Normally a time when you’d be slinging coffees and giant waffles at the diner, no?”

Clarity struck Kate and her brow smoothed. “True. I get one Saturday off a month, and—”

“And we’re honored you’re spending some of it with us,” I said, patting Kate’s hand.

She huffed lightly. “Well … thanks. I’m not great at doing things just for fun.”

April grinned like a madwoman. “You’ve come to the right place. Er, well, not literally—though I do love our little bed-and-breakfast and weekend brunch is delicious and fun. But what I mean is I am queen of doing things just for fun, and I shall teach you my ways.” She bowed with a flourish of fingers.

We all chuckled and agreed she was crazy, but we appreciated that about her. A waitress came and took our order, and we all decided to do the buffet. It was so gorgeous when we’d walked past it on the way to our table, I had to have it. A few minutes later, we’d all returned with plates piled high with delicious food. I’d focused my efforts on the amazing-looking pastries, the beautiful locally sourced berries, and some of the house-made yogurt.

“Okay, this is amazing. I had no idea how fancy it’d be,” I said, spearing a few berries.

April preened. “We are pretty fancy. I know you’re all about beers and tots with those Walker brothers, but if you come to the dark side over here, you get petite cakes, high tea, and brunch.” She winked.

Kate set her china coffee cup on its saucer. “It definitely makes the diner look like a grease stain.”

“No, no, no. We need the diner,” April insisted. “It’s a totally different feel. We do the fancy, pretty stuff, but sometimes a woman needs fried eggs and giant waffles and sausage links.”

Kate shrugged. “I guess.”

I noticed the pull at the corners of her mouth. Not quite a frown, but … something. “Are you happy there? At the diner?”

She loosed a weighty sigh. “No. I mean, I wouldn't say I’m unhappy, but I never imagined doing this so long. Though, having a kid when you’re basically still a kid tends to change your plans.”

“Can you do something else?” April asked, her tone surprisingly gentle. So far, she’d been brash and pretty pushy in an endearing way, but she seemed to understand the need to pull back a little in this case.

Kate held up a perfect croissant in two fingers. “Right now, I can enjoy my day off and this delicious, prissy brunch.”

We all laughed, and April and I shot each other a quick glance. Clearly, cased closed. Kate was a tough nut to crack, but she was opening up to us bit by bit. Admitting she’d had other plans and that they’d changed was progress. We still
